NAME  : Bharatmala Pari Yojana

TYPE OF YOJANA  :  Integrated Highways and Road Infrastructure development program

PURPOSE  :  Bharatmala Pariyojana is a new umbrella program for the highways sector that focuses on optimizing efficiency of freight and passenger movement across the country by bridging critical infrastructure gaps through effective interventions like development of Economic Corridors, Inter Corridors and Feeder Routes, National Corridor Efficiency Improvement, Border and International connectivity roads, Coastal and Port connectivity roads and Green-field expressways.

  • Optimizing efficiency of the movement of goods and people across the country to build 50 new National Corridors.

  • 550 districts will be connected through NH linkages.
  • Efficiency of existing corridors through development of Multi modal Logistic parks will be improved and bottleneck points will be identified and eliminated.

  • Enhanced focus on improving connectivity in North East and leveraging synergies with Inland Waterways

STRUCTURE  :  Projects under Bharatmala Phase-I are to be implemented through NHAI, NHIDCL, MoRTH and State PWDs. Provision has been made for effective delegation in appraisal/approval of individual project stretches. Effective delegation has been made in appraisal /approval of individual project stretches

  • All PPP BOT (Toll) projects where no grant (or VGF) is given to the concessionaire and the construction and maintenance is financed by toll revenues will be appraised and approved by the Board of NHAI.

  • All EPC projects implemented by NHAI will be approved by NHAI Board after proper appraisal, within the budgeted financial resources approved under this program.

  • NHAI Board will be authorized to suitably delegate its powers on appraisal and approval of projects within NHAI.

PROJECTS DETAILS  :  A total of around 24,800 kms are being considered in Phase I of Bharatmala. In addition, Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase –I also includes 10,000 kms of balance road works under NHDP, taking the total to 34,800 kms at an estimated cost of Rs.5,35,000 crore.

Bharatmala Phase I – is to be implemented over a five years period of i.e. 2017-18 to 2021-22. Components of Phase I which include  Economic corridors development, Inter-corridor & feeder roads, National Corridors Efficiency improvements:,  Border & International connectivity roads, Coastal & port connectivity roads,  Expressways.        

BENEFITS  :  Bharatmala will also have a positive impact on the Logistic Performance Index (LPI) of the country.

The benefits of Road Development work undertaken by Shri Narendra Modi Government can be explained by this news published in Indian Express on 27th November 2018. Delhi Meerut Eastern Peripheral Expressway- The twin projects happen to be one of Indian’s most ambitious Road Network initiatives in recent times. This express way is expected to cut down the travel time between the two cities by 60 minutes. The foundation was laid down on 5th Nove.2015. With expenditure of Rs.4617 crores the construction of the  project was completed in 500 days. The phase 1 was inaugurated in November 2018 by Shri Narendra Modi. This expressway has 14 lanes and Solar powered lighting system amongst many other innovative features.

LAUNCHING  DETAILS  :  On 24th October 2017  Cabinet Committee on Economic  Affairs  gave approval for Phase I of Bharatmala Pariyojana

BENEFICIARIES  :  This yojana benefits the large population in and around the Express ways, National Highways, State highways, dry ports, Special Economic Zones & logistic parks .

  • This yojana will also help generate a large number of direct and indirect employment in the construction activity, the development of highways amenities and also as part of the enhanced economic activity in different parts of the country that will result from better road  connectivity .
